Space Environment Technologies Company Information

About Space Environment Technologies

Space Environment Technologies provides advanced space weather products and services. Our core expertise is the accurate specification of solar spectral irradiance variations. We link that information with empirical, physics-based, and hybrid environmental, operational, and design models that require a solar energy input. We have a wealth of experience in the process of transitioning research models into operational systems.

Along with our partners, we actively conduct research and develop applications to meet space environment user requirements by combining solar irradiances with research and operational models at a systems level. The result is improved space weather forecast products for the design, development, and operation of space and ground technological systems.

Strategic vision

Space Environment Technologies is envisioning and building the tools that enable human evolution into space in order to improve the quality of life on Earth.

Mission statement

We will provide customers with the world's most advanced space weather information and forecasting technologies. We utilize leading-edge space physics models and aerospace applications as summarized in the National Space Weather Implementation Plan to accurately characterize the space environment. Our partners are government agencies, university researchers, and industry leaders and, together, we will create cutting-edge, applied-research solutions to reduce adverse solar-terrestrial effects. We believe that a resourceful use of our combined knowledge about the space environment’s influence on technological systems will improve the quality of life for our global society.

A Brief History

Space Environment Technologies (SET), located in Pacific Palisades, California, was founded in August 2001 by Dr. W. Kent Tobiska. The company evolved from a small Northrop Grumman division that was originally part of Federal Data Corporation (FDC).

In May 2000, following the signing of the NOAA/SEC-FDC Cooperative Research and Development Agreement (CRADA), FDC created its SpaceWx division having the goal of developing space weather products. Within six months, FDC was purchased by Logicon, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Northrop Grumman. In 2001, as Logicon divested itself of space weather activities, Dr. Tobiska formed SET as a sole proprietorship. By October, Dr. Tobiska obtained all worldwide rights from Northrop Grumman to research, software, and hardware associated with the SpaceWx division. He immediately licensed the use of these assets to SET.

Key Personnel

Dr. W. Kent Tobiska is the President and Chief Scientist for Space Environment Technologies in Pacific Palisades, California. He has 30 years experience in space physics research and space mission operations. Dr. Tobiska is a Principal Investigator (PI) or Co-Investigator (Co-I) on the NASA Galileo, SOHO, UARS, TIMED, and SDO missions and on NASA JSDAP and LWS programs. He serves as the COSPAR C1 Sub-Commission (Thermosphere & Ionosphere) and COSPAR International Reference Atmosphere (CIRA) Task Force Vice-Chairs, the lead U.S. delegate to ISO for developing a solar irradiance international standard, and the AIAA ASETC Committee on Standards Chair. He has authored or co-authored over 60 peer-review scientific papers as well as 7 books and major technical publications.

Mr. Dave Bouwer is the Chief Engineer for Space Environment Technologies in Boulder, Colorado. In February 1999, he came to FDC from Sterling Software to begin work with Dr. Tobiska. He was instrumental in technically implementing the NOAA/SEC-Sterling Software CRADA that transitioned the Magnetospheric Specification Model (MSM) from research to operational status. With the NOAA/SEC-FDC (now SET) CRADA, he successfully implemented the SIP (S2K) model from research into operations. Since then, he has implemented nearly all operational systems at SET. Mr. Bouwer provides 25 years of experience in space environment technical and research engineering.
